OverviewReplacement of an old Fixed Speed Atlas Copco compressor with a new Variable Speed one.
What was neededBethel Rhodes specialises in wire and stainless steel wire goods, including trays, baskets, display racks, vermin traps, show pens, wire fencing, steel wire, wire rope and more. Established in 1835 and based in Keighley in West Yorkshire, the company uses the latest modern technology to manufacture its high-quality products. The company had been using a Fixed Speed Atlas Copco GA22FF (127 cfm) compressor, installed around 16 years ago by PPS Managing Director Gary Whitaker. This compressor had itself been a replacement for the original Fluidair rotary vane compressor that Gary had installed for them when working at his previous company, around 25 years’ ago. While the Atlas Copco fixed speed compressor had provided excellent service over the years, according to Bethel Rhodes’ Managing Director, Tony Trowers, it was due for a full overhaul.
What we didThe first step was data logging (Itrack) at the company’s site to measure the current energy use and the potential savings of changing the machine. The results projected that the installation of a new state-of-the-art Variable Speed Atlas Copco GA15VSD+FF (15-88 cfm) would lead to annual energy savings of £3,500. The new unit was installed earlier this year by a team that included Gary Whitaker's son, Ashley Whitaker, who joined PPS as an apprentice engineer in October 2011. The machines in the Atlas Copco VSD+ range utilise permanent magnet oil-coooled motors, which can save up to 50% on energy costs, compared with fixed speed compressors.
Why PPS?Bethel Rhodes already had a good working relationship with PPS – both companies are based in West Yorkshire – and had been happy with the service provided by its previous Atlas Copco compressor. PPS was also able to offer additional peace of mind by signing the new compressor up for Atlas Copco’s Comfort Air Seven Year service contract.
Key benefitsEasy to install, maintain and service, with a greater variety of control and monitoring features, the GA15VSD+FF is one of the most energy efficient on the market, offering energy savings of up to 35% compared with a fixed speed compressor.
Installing the new Variable Speed Atlas Copco compressor was definitely a good move for us. We have been told that the unit will pay for itself in two years, which would definitely make the spend worthwhile. When it comes to our suppliers, we like to keep it local wherever possible. We have been associated with PPS for many years and wouldn’t consider dealing with anyone else.
