A world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative, high-efficiency cooling solutions, Airedale Air Conditioning services commercial, industrial and public sector customers in the UK and exports to more than 60 countries across the globe. While its core business is precision air conditioning – including comfort air conditioning and the software design and optimisation of air conditioning controls – the company also has extensive experience in chillers, IT cooling, condensers and condensing units, as well as super-efficient integrated cooling systems that reduce power consumption and operational costs. Founded in 1974, Airedale is this year celebrating its 40th anniversary.

What was needed

In September 2013, a major fire broke out at Airedale’s plant in Rawdon, West Yorkshire, with more than 100 fire fighters called to the scene. The factory was so badly damaged that it had to be demolished. Airedale took the opportunity to rebuild from scratch and a new state-of-the-art facility on the original Rawdon site is due to be opened in 2016. Meanwhile, the company moved its activities to a temporary site and brought in design consultants, who got in touch with PPS to source new equipment to help get the site up and running.

What we did

PPS supplied two new 45KW variable speed Atlas Copco compressors and worked with the mechanical and electrical contractors on the pipework system, fitting Transair aluminium pipework for compressed air and nitrogen. PPS also put a hire compressor in Airedale’s metalwork production facility, located at a second temporary site in Pudsey. This compressor was later replaced by an Atlas Copco VSD+ model. The long-term plan is to move these compressors to the new facility on the original Rawdon site when it reopens.

Why PPS?

Dale Morgan of Silcock Leedham Consulting Engineers brought PPS on board for the work. “They are a company we’ve worked with in the past,” he says, “and they are very good product wise, but also very responsive service wise. Given the aftermath of the fire and how quickly Airedale needed to get things back up and running, Pennine was the best option.”

Key benefits

For Silcock Leedham, it was both the speed of Pennine’s design service and their ability to provide hire and bought products at short notice that were of particular benefit.
We would definitely work with Pennine again. For anything with compressed air or gas pipework service, Pennine would be the go-to company.
Dale Morgan, Silcock Leedham
Pennine as a supplier were chosen by Silcock Leedham and we had no previous experience of them. However, I’m happy to say that Pennine responded quickly and professionally to our needs and were able to cope with the demanding timescale we laid down. They installed the two larger machines without problems and loaned us a smaller machine for our facility in Pudsey as we were unsure how much capacity we would require.

Pennine worked closely with us installing data loggers on the loan machine from which we were able to establish our exact capacity requirements. Working on the accurate data, we ordered the correctly sized compressor from Pennine, which was delivered and installed, and the loan machine removed without any issues. I would be happy to work with Pennine on further projects.
